I've played all the Close Combats. For whatever reason, the performance of The Longest Day and Last Stand Arnhem are the worst. I've tried on two PC notebooks (Windows 7 and 10) and they thrash the CPU something terrible. The framerate is quite poor and playing is far less fun than the other CC games because of it.

It doesn't matter that the PCs are well overspecced and play Panthers in the Fog and Gateway to Caen (and older CCs) just fine.

Is there anything that can be done? I really want to play both because of their outstanding mods.

Update. The above mentioned problem affects single player games vs the AI. LSA and TLD multiplayer games against real people seem to have much smoother frame rates so far.

Good news. Hopefully FreeKing will be back, but in the meantime it looks like he's uploaded this mod to Moddb.

Excited and grateful to see you bringing your ideas to GtC, FreeKing. Unfortunately I think your dropbox link in the first post might be dead.  Sad

Sounds fascinating FreeKing. Love what your small maps mods do for gameplay. I look forward to seeing what comes of this noble undertaking.

I agree snipers are mostly useless in PitF. They seem to be hard-coded to be terrible shots. Changing their accuracy and caliber of shot with modding tools did nothing to their kill rate, and I was testing for two days to try and get them a bit better...even against men at ideal ranges in zero cover they almost always miss.

All they are good for as individuals in PitF are as spotters for the team and for slowing enemy troops down.

I also modded/added them to rifle teams as designated marksmen, where they are still mostly useless.

Very interesting! I have walked for days around that general area of the crash site. But it's quite remote. Who would have known it was there?

From videos, the one thing that has really impressed me with Close Combat moving to 3D is the line of sight tool. Otherwise their 3d engine seems sadly antiquated. I am hoping there will be a PC demo to see game-play for oneself.

I hope the The Bloody First does well though. It's an interesting concept following a division through three theaters in one game.

Thanks Berger. I am glad you like it.

To answer your question... This mod wouldn't be compatible with GtC. The German weapon and voice samples wouldn't take too long to adapt to GtC though. If anyone knows of any good sources for British weapon and voice samples to make a similar mod for GtC, feel free to share.

Wow. Thank you FreeKing. That is very generous of you to create and share. I read through all the tutorial and I was really impressed by your clear, well-illustrated and thorough documentation. I appreciate you explaining your discoveries behind AI battle behaviors and deployment too. That was very interesting and made a lot of sense as well.

Thanks for sharing the example map for GtC too!  Cool

I look forward to resizing and VL reworking of maps as soon as I have finished my new PitF mod.

That would be awesome FreeKing. Thank you.

Then we could try applying a similar approach to Gateway to Caen maps.

PostForum: Close Combat Panthers in the Fog   Posted: Thu Sep 19, 2019 8:45 pm   Subject: [RELEASED] Rolling Thunder voice and sound mod
This mod transforms the sterile soundscape of PitF into a living battlefield, replacing weapon and voice effects.

Most of the samples came from VetBoB for CC4 by TT, "the heaviest, loudest, meanest, dirtiest sound mod around." The weapons and explosions have a lot more bass and reverb, along with many ancillary effects like the tinkle of shell casings falling to the ground. You'll also hear a lot of new calls, cries and curses of soldiers under fire. (There is a small amount of profanity to be heard in this mod.)

I adapted the sounds and voices for PitF. Most of the voice samples were remixed to reduce repetition and distortion, as PitF seems to play more sounds simultaneously than earlier Close Combat games. The contextual shouts were remixed to better match the context of other voices. I also remixed some of the automatic weapons to better reflect the burst length of weapons in PitF. Going beyond VetBoB I added new samples for the MP40 (after listening to 50 different MP40 recordings), the Browning .30 cals, and others.

Download the Rolling Thunder voice and sound mod.

Be sure to check out the mod which inspired this one! 'FreeKing's Small Maps mod', released August 2019, thoughtfully rethinks PitF map sizes and reworks victory location placement to mimic CC2, making the AI much more enjoyable. His mod transformed PitF for me from worst in the series to best in the series. I wouldn't play without it.

You might also like my 'Thinner Fog mod' to reduce the obscuring visual effect of fog in PitF, without removing it completely.

PostForum: Close Combat Panthers in the Fog   Posted: Thu Sep 19, 2019 2:26 pm   Subject: Re: [RELEASE] PitF Small Map Mod
Thanks again FreeKing. I have been doing a lot of playing and modding of PitF, inspired by your work.

I agree the AI with your 'small maps mod' is close to as good as it has ever been in CC2. It was clear to me that you gave a lot of thought to placement of victory locations and which part of maps to crop. Part of me thinks this mod should be called something else, because the maps, while trimmed a bit, are still not small. And the changes to AI behavior and gameplay are much more significant.

You kindly offered to explain how you created small maps. You mentioned it's an easy process, if time consuming. I'd be quite interested in learning!

Thanks SchnelleMeyer. I am starting small, but it's fun learning and seeing what can be done.

I miss those epic mods of old that added so much realism and variety to CC.

5 out of 6 Steam reviewers don't recommend what, dj?

I see 70% of Steam reviewers recommending Steel Division 2, and similar stats for the first game: Steel Division Normandy.
